Interesting Coffee History

Coffee was probably first grown in the province of Kaffa, now known as Ethiopia. Coffee history suggests that the coffee bean was first chewed by natives as food, before the bean was used to make a beverage.

There is some evidence that coffee trees were grown in monastery gardens about 1000 years ago. The first commercial cultivation of coffee trees were not reported until the fifteenth century.

The first coffee houses were opened in Mecca and became very popular in the Arab world. The Arabs controlled the coffee trade and would not allow the coffee tree to be exported. Eventually, seed beans were taken out and grown in the Dutch colonies in India and Java.

A coffee house or cafe was opened in Venice in the middle of the sixteenth century and then in other European countries, like Austria, Germany, France and England. From Europe coffee was taken to the U.S. and has spread to the rest of the world.

Coffee is now one of the most valuable commodities in the world. It is an actively traded commodity in the Future Exchanges.

History research suggest that coffee consumed in moderation does not seem to be a health risk and can actually have some health benefits.
