Interesting Coffee History
Coffee was probably first grown in the province of Kaffa, now known as Ethiopia. Coffee
history suggests that the coffee bean was first chewed by natives as food, before the bean
was used to make a beverage.
There is some evidence that coffee trees were grown in monastery gardens about 1000 years ago.
The first commercial cultivation of coffee trees were not reported until the fifteenth century.
The first coffee houses were opened in Mecca and became very popular in the Arab world. The Arabs
controlled the coffee trade and would not allow the coffee tree to be exported. Eventually, seed
beans were taken out and grown in the Dutch colonies in India and Java.
A coffee house or cafe was opened in Venice in the middle of the sixteenth century and then in
other European countries, like Austria, Germany, France and England. From Europe coffee was taken
to the U.S. and has spread to the rest of the world.
Coffee is now one of the most valuable commodities in the world. It is an actively traded commodity
in the Future Exchanges.
History research suggest that coffee consumed in moderation does not seem to be a health
risk and can actually have some health benefits.
